Marianella Braithwaite

Marianella was born in Chile en 1946. She  immigrated to Australia in 1988 and she is based in Wollongong NSW.

Her career began in 1968 in her country of birth under the tutelage of the sculptor artist Alfonso D’Albora. During his lessons DÁlbora taught her the refined art of sculpture, which involved proportion, form and expression in a figurative art. Her emerging artwork was profoundly influenced by D’Albora's work and by the impressionist Auguste Rodin in his representation of the human body. At the same time, her art was subjective by her upbringing due to challenging events; Marianella was born in a family surrounded only by women; this female environment catalysed her interest on the condition that dictates their lives, which inspired her to explore and expressed visually the female figure in a tangible or symbolic form. Years passed, Marianella married and gave birth to four daughters; these exciting events exacerbated her interest and restlessness to recreate in an art expression women’s issues.

When Marianella migrated to Australia she continues her studies at Gymea Technical College (TAFE) in Sydney. At TAFE she approached a variety of techniques in the media of ceramics, bronze sculpture, glaze, clay and foundry metal casting. As she learnt new techniques Marianella sought to continue her education.  In 2002 she was successful securing a place at the University of Wollongong in the Faculty of Creative Arts in a Bachelor of Creative Arts degree. Marianella completed her degree in 2004 with Distinction. This allowed her to enrol in a Master of Creative Arts which she completed in 2006 also with Distinction. Its exhibition Tangible/Intangible aimed to reflect on hot topics such as abortion, maternity, castration complex and others. During this period Marianella held solo and group exhibitions in Australia and overseas.

The aim of her artwork has always been to explore the concept of women’s empowerment, emancipation and equality. For this reason in 2010 she began to explore literary works to further her knowledge of theories in women’s agency and feminist discourses to clarify and justify her artistic representations. For her research Marianella was awarded a place on the Dean’s merit list in 2010 for excellent academic performance in Arts. This experience inspired her to continue her studies and she applied for the Master of Philosophy at the same Faculty. The exegesis was officially completed on the 8 of May 2019.

Presently, Marianella is working on her next exhibition that will be held at Black Forest Gallery, in Eden, New York. She is  researching digital technology with a tutor from UOW as her goal is to intertwine technology with visual arts in her exhibition. Marianella's next project is to attempt the Doctor of Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong.
